This is the official “Roundup Wrap Up” report for the 2019 Roundup. Every year we summarize what took place for those of you who attended and those of you who were unable to attend (including myself).
2020 Roundup dates – April 5th through April 8th, 2020 – Riverside Resort and Casino. You may note that this is the same time as the annual Baker to Vegas Race. We had a choice to make and it was not that hard. The following week is Easter and we have never held it on Easter. The week before puts us in March. March can be an iffy deal weather wise sometimes.
First news first – Moon Update – I am on the mend. Under threat of great bodily harm, I have been following all of the orders laid down for me by Robyn (AKA Thor’s Hammer), prior to her heading to the Roundup. I have a chest x-ray coming up and then another follow-up with my doctor. After that, I go in for a breathing test. I have been warned and am heeding all of the advice given to me concerning the possibility of a relapse due to doing stupid things. I would like to thank all of you who signed the cards at the 2019 Roundup and those of you who have emailed me get well sentiments.
Normally, I wait till the end of this message to thank my wonderful wife Robyn for all the work that she does on the Roundup. This year I think she deserves to be at the top again. A great big thank you to Robyn who works extremely hard from September till the Roundup and for about a month after. Robyn handles all the money, checks, contracts, food ordering, name processing, printing of name tags, purchasing and tracking the door prizes, paying the bills, negotiating costs, etc etc etc and she also runs the poker tournament. This year she headed off to the Roundup, sans Moon, and she and the rest of the volunteer crew did an outstanding job.
I would like to especially give a huge, huge thank you to Charlie Engelbart, who kept me in the loop during the Roundup and basically handled everything in my absence. We also want to give a special thank you to all the numerous people who stepped up to help Robyn this year in my absence.
As usual our illustrious news reporter, Ralph Williams will again be writing the article for the Star News and I will publish it to the list as soon as it is delivered to me.
The final official attendance this year was 1151, which is a new record. I would also like to remind everyone that widows and widowers of LASD Members are always welcomed at the Roundup. They are and will always be part of the LASD Family.
ALADS again funded the entire HR 218 process as they have since its inception in 2006. If you participated in the HR 218 process and would like to express your gratitude to ALADS, you can email the President, Ron Hernandez at rhernandez@alads.org
The LASD Range Staff, Deputies Randy Tweedy, Joey Stoker, Lee Leatherman and our HR 218 Crew (Chairman Walt Bouman and his cadre of dedicated volunteers) processed a new record of 497 retired members for the HR 218 National CCW. We would also like to thank Sheriff Alex Villanueva for the LASD Range Staff who administered the HR 218 qualification course. If you participated in the HR 218 process and would like to email Sheriff Villanueva and express your appreciation, you can email his staff atavillan@lasd.org
***A note about the HR 218 qualification process in 2020. There will be new safety procedures in place for all those retired members who are going to participate in the HR 218 qualification. These rules will be strictly enforced.
• All weapon(s) and magazines must be unloaded and carried in a zippered gun case or hard gun case. No weapons in holsters or carried free hand. If you are shooting two weapons (auto loader and revolver) each must be in a zippered gun case or hard gun case and unloaded.
• The weapons shall be kept in this condition until you are at the firing line and instructed to open your carrier by the range staff.
• Your ammo can also be carried in this container but your weapon and any magazines must remain unloaded.
• You must also bring your own ammo as the range staff can no longer provide ammo for the shooters.
• Also, make sure that your retirement credentials are valid (not expired). If your retirement credentials are not valid, you will not be allowed to shoot. Two members were turned away this year because their retirement credentials were expired.
